About the Unlibrarian
Hello! I’m Halsted, a/k/a the unlibrarian. I call myself “the unlibrarian” for two reasons. First and foremost, I provide essential library services while not yet having my MLIS. I could call myself a “paralibrarian” but that implies that paraprofessional is somehow less than professional. The second reason is because I love technology; I am especially passionate about the use of technology to promote the library as an indispensable part of twenty-first century life. The term “cybrarian”, while clever, did not fit me, either.
So, while talking with a friend about the intersection of paralibrarian and cybrarian and what to call myself, I jokingly suggested, “Unlibrarian.” It stuck.
About My Background
Though I did not plan to become the unlibrarian, libraries have always been significant to me. As a child, my favorite travels were those to the library at the end of my block, and I spent the majority of junior high and high school either at the library, skulking in the stacks, or at home on my trusty Commodore 64, logging into BBSes with a 300-baud modem. Then, while earning my undergraduate degree, I was given a choice between the last two work-study jobs available: one at the gym, the other at the medical library. I took the latter without hesitation.
Since then, I have worked in academic, public, and corporate libraries. It took me a decade and a half to get the hint and apply to library school. I enrolled in Wayne State University’s School of Library and Information Science in August of 2010. (My plan of work is posted for your perusal.)
I bring experience and enthusiasm for libraries and technology to my coursework, and I enjoy collaborating with my fellow students.
